Mural highlights plight of mentally ill, homeless

The Blade - 8/1/2018

Aug. 01--A dedication ceremony for a new mosaic mural dedicated to helping to eradicate the stigma behind mental health and homelessness has been scheduled for 12:30 p.m.Aug. 10.

The event will showcase Pieces to Peace, a 20-foot-by-20-foot glass mosaic that is being installed on the side of a building in downtown Toledo at 411 Michigan Ave., at the intersection of Michigan and Adams streets.

The project was a collaboration between artist Gail Christofferson of Animal House Glass studio in Bowling Green, and A Renewed Mind, a local nonprofit mental health care provider. It was funded by a $31,800 grant from the David C. and Lura M. Lovell Foundation through the Toledo Community Foundation, and a $1,000 grant from the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Lucas County.

Residents at Cherry Street Mission, Toledo Streets Newspaper, and other shelters and organizations, along with members of the public, helped assemble the glass pieces of the mosaic during community forums over the past year. The design depicts a homeless person with mental issues crouched in a structure with light coming through a window above a set of eyes.

The presentation will include food trucks on-site from noon to 1 p.m.

For more information, contact Christofferson at 419-356-2913 or email gail@animalhouseglass.com.
