Former combat photographer visits GWU for Veterans Portrait Project

Star - 2/6/2017

Feb. 06--BOILING SPRINGS -- Gardner-Webb University will host two-time Military Photographer of the Year Stacy Pearsall and the Veterans Portrait Project.

Pearsall will be at the Charlotte campus at 8030 Arrowridge Blvd. on Feb. 27 and at the main campus in Boiling Springs on Feb. 28 as part of the university's Distinguished Artist Series.

The two-day event will kick off Pearsall's art show in the Tucker Gallery at Gardner-Webb's main campus.

The Air Force combat photographer is a decorated veteran who started the Veterans Portrait Project while recovering from wounds she sustained in active duty. Through the project, veterans can have their portraits taken free of charge. Pearsall provides each veteran with a high-resolution digital image or an actual print.

"They're young and old, male and female. They come from all walks of life, and have varied religious beliefs, levels of education and racial ethnicity," Pearsall said. "What unites them all is their service. It's a bond that cannot be broken, and I'm proud to be one of them."

Veterans throughout the region are invited to take advantage of this no-cost opportunity by signing up at www.Gardner-Webb.edu/veterans-portrait as soon as possible. Appointment times are available from 10 to 4 p.m.Feb. 27 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Feb. 28.
