Bill would extend veteran tax break

Livingston County News - 9/28/2017

A bill extending a property tax exemption for Cold War veterans was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo earlier this month.

The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Patrick Gallivan (R-Elma), whose district includes portions of Livingston County.

The bill, S5659A, was approved by the Senate and Assembly in June. It gives local governments and school districts the option to continue to provide a real tax exemption to cold war veterans beyond the ten-year limitation provided for in the exemption's enabling legislation.

"This legislation recognizes the commitment and sacrifice made by the men and women who served in the United States military during the Cold War," said Gallivan in a statement. "By continuing this program, we express our deep appreciation for their brave service to our country."

Cold War veterans are defined as individuals who served in a branch of the United States Armed Forced between Sept. 2, 1945 and Dec. 26, 1991. Many served during times of peace.
