Morningside VFW announces annual fishing rodeo for hospitalized veterans

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - 3/2/2020

Mar. 2--More than 100 hospitalized veterans -- more so if donations support it -- will converge on Squaw Valley Park in O'Hara for a day of fishing and barbecue, thanks to the Morningside VFW Post 3945.

Members announced their eighth annual fishing rodeo, scheduled for May 13 at the park along Fox Chapel Road.

"These guys enjoy a day of fishing, sunshine, camaraderie and a delicious meal off the grill," Commander John Santoriello said. "We just want to get them out of the hospital for a day and give them something to enjoy."

The pond will be stocked prior to the event.

VFW members are seeking donations to help pay for the picnic, during which each fisherman goes home with a bag of socks, hats, toiletries and other items to make their life in the hospital a bit easier.

Veterans who attend the fishing derby will be transported from the VAPHS hospitals in O'Hara and Oakland, as well as from the Southwestern Veteran s Center and the Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard.

Santoriello said he hopes to see more men and women participating in the event each year, based on the positive feedback received by members.

"Staff members at all the hospitals report back to us that the veterans talk about the wonderful times they have at the fish rodeo and they look forward to it every year," he said.

Anyone interested in donating to next year's event can send a check to Post 3945, 1820 Morningside Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
